A high price to pay

I would like to share a story with you that was told by an old preacher by the name of Paris Reidhead who died in 1992.

This is a true story that takes place in the early 1850’s

After making his fortune in the California goldfields an Englishman decided to return to his homeland. After traveling overland from California he had a little time to kill before catching a ship for New York so he decided to see New Orleans. He ended up down at the slave auction where slaves were being sold. He noticed a young girl on the auction block. The bidding was frantic and he overheard two sleazy characters who were bidding on the young girl with intentions that turned his stomach. As the bidding increased the bidders dropped out and the successful miner walked up to the auctioneer and told him that he would offer twice as much as the latest bid. The bidders gasped as his bid was the highest that any slave had been sold for at this auction block. The miner paid his bill, received a bill of sale and walked up to the young girl standing on the auction block. As he stood next to the auction block, the young girl stepped down and standing eye level, spit in his face. She then screwed up her face and said, “I hate you.” After wiping off his face with the back of his hand he reached up and took the girl by the hand and led her away. He took her down the street and they walked through the door of an office building. After the payment of some money, he received some papers which he then handed to the young girl. “Here is a certificate giving you your freedom,” he told her. “I hate you,” she hissed. “You don’t understand,” he told her; “these papers set you free, no one owns you.” She said, “What! You paid twice as much for me as anyone else who was sold in that place, and you are giving me my freedom? I DON’T BELIEVE YOU.” “Yes,” he answered her; these papers give you your freedom. “Stop mister,” she cried.” Do you mean to say that you bought me only to set me free?” He answered, “Yes that is why I bought you, to set you free.” At that, tears flooded into her eyes, eyes that had not shed tears for a long time, especially tears of joy. Her face softened and she fell to her knees, reaching out to put her hands around the miner’s boots she laid her face on those rough boots and through tears she sobbed, “you bought me to set me free… you bought me to set me free. You paid more for me than anyone has ever paid before, just to set me free.” Then with tears streaming down her face, she cried out as she looked up, “Oh sir, all I want in life is to be your slave… you bought me to set me free.”

Listen folks, this is your story too. The Lord Jesus Christ bought you to set you free and when you come to that realization it will be the joy of your life to bow before Him and tell Him that you will be His bond servant forever.

He bought you; He bought you to set you free! Not only from Hell, but from the world, and from the flesh, and from the Devil…He bought you to set you free. Bow to His feet and take from His hand the great gift of salvation that He purchased with His own blood, remembering, HE BOUGHT YOU …TO …SET YOU… FREE!
